My ayi cooked a small dinner tonight: steamed fish with vegetables in soy sauce, and (as usual) some rice. But the nicest thing came afterwards: a big plate of strawberries. I almost forgot about it, but in Shanghai strawberries always appear on the streets in the weeks before Christmas. Normally they are available until March, when other fruits take over in the fruit stalls

China claims to be the founder of many things. In the past years I have for example read that soccer is a Chinese invention, and even that golf originally came from China. Yesterday I came accross another Chinese invention in the Chinese press: wine. This time, however, an American scientist was the source, and not Xinhua news agency. Even though China may have been the first wine making civilization, it still does not produce many drinkable wines. But a lot of effort (and money) is put into it, so it's very well possible that ten years from now China will be among the better wine nations.
