Chinese state-owned enterprises have a different appraisal system than Western companies. In line with the infamous self-criticisms that many Chinese had to write over the past decades, employees at SOE[base ']s have to write their own appraisals. These include their achievements and goals for next year, but of course also their weak points. Many employees fear writing them, so private companies have sprung up that help you to write these. They do pretty good business, with prices of between RMB 200 and 1000 for an appraisal. The writer comes to visit you in your office or at home to discuss the points tht could be included, and then comes back with a nicely written appraisal. Turnaround time is 2-3 days, but if necessary it can also be done in a few hours. Some young people interviewed laughed about it:[per thou]Why bother writing them, bosses don[base ']t have time to read them anyway[per thou]. (Source: Shanghai Daily)
