Just arrived back in Shanghai, and writing this log in the cab that
drives me home. Vacation was fantastic: Koh Samui is a beautiful island
with great weather, good & cheap seafood, and nice bars. The only
draw-back is that package tourists from Europe have also discovered it.
In Chaweng, the most popular beach on the island, people without
tattoo[base ']s were literally a minority... A bit like Mallorca I suppose
(never been there). Anyway, the island is bigger than just Chaweng, and
by driving a car for 20 minutes you find places that these package
tourist only know from the post cards they sent home. I can recommend
this island to everyone, from Shanghai it[base ']s a 4 hour flight to Bangkok,
and from there short flight to Koh Samui (Bangkok Air flies 17 times
per day)
I hoped Shanghai would not be too busy after midnight on a Sunday
night, but that was a mistake. Huge lines at immigration, a long wait
for suitcases, and then the longest line for a taxi I have ever seen at
Pudong. Unbelievable, I thought this kind of lines only exist at
Hongqiao. Anyway, after 45 minutes of waiting in the cold (only 16
degrees, and that[base ']s very cold after one week in which even at night the
mercury did not drop below 28 degrees) I finally got a taxi. An old
Santana that seems to fall apart at every bumb in the road, but that[base ']s
maybe no wonder at speeds over 150 km/h. The driver probably watched
the Spain F1 GP tonight! At least I am home quickly. Had a great week,
but glad to be back. Lots of work to do in the next couple of
days/weeks, but looking forward to it.
