According to the World Tourist Organization, China has become the
fourth most-popular tourist destination in the world. Last year 41.8
million tourists visited the mainland, an increase of 27% in the year
before. This excludes Hong Kong, which had 40 million visitors last
year (+22%). What the tourist board did not mention is that the high
increase is partly due to lower tourist figures in 2003, when SARS
fears kept tourists away for several months.
