Nvu 1.0 Open Source WYSIWYG Web Editor
A picture named nvu.jpg

Charles W. Moore over at AppleLinks posted a story about an interesting piece of software that just hit version 1.0. Charles posted a detailed mini-review about this open source WYSIWYG Web Editor that was compelling enough to get me to download and try it out. Although I tend to spend the vast majority of my time in BBEdit, there are times when a visual editor is helpful, especially when you inherit a project comprised of far too much spaghetti code to make sense out of as was the case just yesterday when I had to dust off Dreamweaver MX 2004 to help isolate a few problem areas in the project. God I had forgotten what a slow piece of crap that app is under OS X.

I've used DW since version 1 but on the Mac, that app is so damn slow it literally isn't worth the effort (and we're talking about a top of the line dual processor G5 with 3 Gigs of Ram). Suffice it say, after reading the review of Nvu, I was open to at least trying it out and so far so good. I like the clean interface and it is quite snappy compared to DW.

Thanks Charles for introducing me to this software that otherwise might have gone under the radar. If you are interested in this genre of software, also keep an eye on Karelia for their upcoming release of Sandvox. Many of you might remember Karelia from their fantastic Watson product which has since been sold and is resting comfortably in the halls of Sun Microsystems.
