I had an enjoyable time at the Blogger Happy Hour last night at Holy
Frijoles. I, of course, was the schlub who sat at the bar for
forty-five minutes wondering if the big group in the back was the group
I was supposed to meet. Well, that big group was who I was
supposed to meet. Let's just consider my "late arrival" an
attempt at being fashionably late.
I had a good time, and it was fun to put faces to names. I met the following folks, in no particular order:
There were some other folks there whose names or blogs I forgot.
Admittedly, I am terrible at names. I mean, I could not even
remember the address of my blog. Damn Radio Userland and its
cryptic user number. Time to burn that into my brain like the
value of Pi.
I had a great time, and I look forward to participating in another one
(or crashing it, depending upon your perspective). I loved the
part where I had to explain the beginnings of National Bohemian
Beer. "Oh Boy, what a beer!"
Of course, if anyone wants to get together in the next few days, let me know. I won't be doing anything important.

In the midst of my wonderful vacation, I am awoken today by two things:
- An email from my boss saying the following:
- From: My Boss
To: Me, a Co-Worker,
Cc: My Two Supervisors
Subject: Christmas week email emergency contacts
Date: Thu, 16 Dec 2004 18:17:38 -0500
I've been asked to alert you both to the fact that in the extremely
unlikely event that a NETMAIL emergency should arise during the
migration that I or any combination of others involved at this end
(including Novell) can't resolve, that I am to contact you. So,
please carry your cellphones with you. We all know nothing will
happen, and I know that both of you would do all you could to help if
something did with no reminder from me.
My Boss
- My instant messenger client has been blowing up with IM's from
the admin of this system. Apparently, there was what was
initially thought to be a problem with the proxy feature. Instead
the problem is with the advertised IMAP capability of the replacement
system.
Apparently, the system we are migrating to does not support
X-SENDER. Well, the system we are leaving does. The
Netscape variant of clients--including Thunderbird--use this. So,
what does that mean? A whole bunch of migrated users get are
unable to view their email.
I have no problem with being an emergency contact, as it comes with the
territory. My main issue with that is what type of compensation I
am going to receive. I want to know that if my Christmas is
interrupted by my job, I want to not see them until 10 January, for
example.
I am trying to see what they need from me. In the meantime, I will be annoyed about this development.
