CTIA: Is the phone a new medium or a little TV?
![]() One thing that struck me at CTIA, was that most of the entertainment content that I saw being displayed on cell phones, was just "squashed down" versions of TV programs - Fox, CNN, MTV... The big question is - Do people want little versions of what they can get on TV or are they after different content and a different experience? I happen to think that in the age of the blogger, where people are turning to bloggers for information that they can't get from mainstream media ( MSM), the Cell phone medium must define itself and figure out what it has it differentiate from the established entertainment media, much as the original Cable channels had to do in relation to broadcast TV and therefore provide different content. We need to find the medium makers - the HBOs, the CNNs of Cell-media. Sure, people will initially be drawn to the big brands ( ESPN, MTV ), but then they will seek out content which is unique to this channel and can't be found elsewhere .. . .remember the main audiende for this, will be the people who made SMS into social phenomenon and have grown up with an emotional connection to their phones - these are the people we have to connect to. Good Luck. 9:16:40 PM ![]() |
Wi-Fi rocks at CTIA
Funnily enough, for a conference dominted by the Cell Phone industry,
one of the most noticable things at CTIA was the sheer amount of people
using Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi coverage was everywhere and virtually everyone you
could see was logged on at some point. There were also plenty of
VOIP/Skype headsets around. It's amazing to see how Wi-Fi has become so
adopted, so quickly and is indispensable at this point. Makes me happy
to be part of Ireland's biggest and best Wi-Fi provider Bitbuzz
