"Your inbox is too big".....interesting post from Cole

He references a BBC story that email is the new database...and after reading the story, it reads more like an advertisement for paying for a larger email account.

hmmm and i was thinking that blogs were going to kill email. well, acutally, i still do, but it's more of a hope than factual opinion.

however, here's why it could happen
a) i think a common site blog will take up way less space than all of his students individually keeping all of the mail and attachments that you send out - with a blog, you don't have to send an attachment, it resides on the blog for them to grab...attachments are the space hogs for an email server

b) with a central blog and an individual blog for each student, you can effectively kill email chains due to comments and trackback. especially, with trackback, messages can be passed back and forth between each blog...that is the point of trackback, "hey, come look! i have referenced your message in my message.".

c) blogs have personality...each owner can make a blog look way more appealing and entertaining than email...with email, you get animated v-cards or silly smiley faces, which again take up server space...

d) the blog is designed to store and date content...so, it has the ability to keep you out of the basement as well...

so, for me, i want blogs to kill or severely reduce email as the defacto form of communication...obviously, this will take time to do so.

in fact, if the blogging hosting folks out there are really paying attention, this could be a biz opportunity for them....why let the email folks get all of this money? push blogging as a superior method for communication...it's a thought anyway....

I'm curious as to why this Cisco example was used in a post about corporate blogs

now, Jennifer has the answer to her question...as indicated earlier, they have a blog, it is external, they allow comments - albeit moderated - and they indicate it's to have a dialogue about government/legislative topics....if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and sounds like a duck....it's a blog...

in case anyone hasn't noticed....pretty big corporate fish out there with an external blog....http://cisco.com/gov/blog/....can't see their permalink or trackback mechanism, but this appears to be a pretty large step forward from a corporate blogging standpoint. i would suspect additional blogs will come out of them. they even allow and invite comments....just like a real blog!
