Science

  • The Habitable Planet: A Systems Approach to Environmental Science "Phrases like "biodiversity climate" and "ecosystems" are becoming ubiquitous on evening television broadcasts, yet some may still be unfamiliar with these terms and concepts. Fortunately, there is "The Habitable Planet" website, which was designed by Annenberg Media for teachers and adult learners who wish to learn more about current events in environmental science. The content on the site is divided into thirteen areas, which include oceans, water resources, energy challenges, and agriculture. Within each section, visitors can make their way through separate sections within the online textbook, and also view content that includes interactive labs, graphics, video clips, and specialized glossaries. Returning to the site's homepage, visitors will also note that they can view the content by type, which makes it a bit easier if they are looking for a specific video clip or visual feature." (SR)
  • PlanetPhysics "PlanetPhysics is a virtual community which aims to help make physics knowledge more accessible. PlanetPhysics's content is created collaboratively: the main feature is the physics encyclopedia with entries written and reviewed by members. The entries are contributed under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License (FDL) in order to preserve the rights of both the authors and readers in a sensible way." (IRN)

Teacher Resources

  • Derivative Matching Game "Once again, the Mathematical Association of America has struck instructional gold with this latest gem from their online collection of resources for mathematics educators. Created by Barbara Margolius, this derivative matching game presents users with a game board showing graphs of functions on cards. Essentially, the goal of the game is to match the functions with their derivatives. Visitors can begin by reading an overview of the game, along with some brief instructions, and then they should dive right in. The game can also be customized to match functions with just first derivatives or both first and second derivatives. Mathematics educators will have a lot of fun with this one, and even the mathematically uncertain can be drawn into the fold with this easy to use resource." (SR)

Book Reviews from participants in the Pollinate Your Mind Summer Reading Club

One Sure Thing by Celeste Norfleet: Amazing book. I couldn't put it down once I started it.

Beach House by James Patterson: What a clever plot-so many twists and turns at the end. I didn't want this story to stop.

Cross James Patterson: Very suspenseful.

Judge and Jury by James Patterson: Excellent book. This was my first Patterson read, and I am checking out more today.

Kiss the Girls by James Patterson: Creepy, spooky, and impossible to put down.

Dragon's Lair by Sharon Kay Penman: Great book with great historical accuracy that keeps you guessing to the end.

Prince of Darkness by Sharon Kay Penman: Read it. The last in her series is awesome.

Age of Dreaming by Nina Revoyr: What a great book! This plot has many layers, and it is told by the principal character, who is one classy gentleman. it involves Hollywood silent film history, scandals, or unsolved mysteries. I highly recommend it!

Density of Souls by Christopher Rice: This was a very well written book. This book is about a group of childhood friends sharing a horrible secret from their high school days and five years later coming to grips with it.

Dead of Night by J. D. Robb: A nice change from the usual I expect from J. D. Robb.
