Snow & Cold: Yes, Virginia, This is Alaska!

In January, this is early morning on the 5th, we have had 12.8 inches of snow. Normal snowfall month-to-date is 1.2 inches. For the season we have had 59.4 inches with normal to date being 36.2 inches. Louise and Mary, you do not have to worry; there will be snow for the Iditarod.

This morning the temp has dropped back down to 10 below. The heat from my Mac Power Book feels good---I'm propped up in bed waiting for the house to get warm.

However, there are things beside snow and cold. I have everything ready for the Alaska World Affairs Friday luncheon event. Our speaker is General Joseph Ralston. He was Commander of the Joint Command at Elmendorf from 1992-94 then Supreme Allied Commander of NATO. Currently, he is a State Department special envoy for countering the Kurdistan Worker Party (PKK) and dealing with security issues in Turkey with the Kurds, etc.

I need to be at the Hilton Chart Room about 11:10 to put finishing touches on the room and set up the check in table before people begin arriving at 11:30. We have 58 reservations; my guess is that we will have 25 walk-in people. We will see how good I am at estimating actual attendance.

Life and the World Affair Council goes on. This afternoon I need to run the credit cards and deposit the checks from lunch, take the next speaker postcard to the printer, attach labels and maybe even get it to the bulk mailing post office.

Looking back on yesterday before I actually begin today---yesterday, was a full work day between 3 hours for World Affairs and 3 hours on the Slingerland budget (it is going to be a tight, clean document), Yesterday evening I spent a couple hours analyzing several mutual funds for a friend---after all he provides the peanuts at the UAA hockey games. There weren't any bad ones in the group which was nice. One interesting one was Amana Growth, which invests according to Islamic principles.

I AM WISHING MY NEW FLUEVOGS WOULD ARRIVE THIS MORNING SO I COULD WEAR THEM TO LUNCH! Daughter, we should have made another trip and flown to San Fran to pick them up.
