NORFOLK 100 MILE 24Hr CHALLENGE WALK 30th - 31st July 2005 1pm start
Record entry in International King's Lynn Race.
1pm on the 30th July will see the biggest field for many years toe the line on an historic day in King's Lynn as the longest Walking event to be organised there in 127 years takes place at Lynnsport
Famous Rome Olympic Gold Medallist Don (the Mouse) Thompson (now a sprightly 72) lines up with a host of Modern Day Internationals plus 22 entrants from Holland Belgium & Denmark.
Many World, European & British Champions will be lining up beside many [OE]Novice' charity walkers to try to complete the challenge of walking 100 miles in 24 Hours.
A near record 93 entries have signed up for the full 100 mile event which incorporates the British Race Walking Association Long Distance Championship. There is an International match between the English & Dutch Centurions Clubs & Lynnsport have put up prizes for the top 3 King's Lynn area finishers. There is also an additional 20 Mile race in the middle of the night.
One of the favourites to win the event is the Isle Of Man's Robbie Callister, recently featured on TV winning the The Parishes Walk. He will have to retain his best form however as the entry is peppered with experienced English & Dutch International Ultra Walkers like Ludo Schaerlaekens & last years defending champion Ian Statter.
In the Women's event Britain's amazing Sandra Brown, World No 1 & record holder, is rarely beaten & has every chance of winning the event outright as she did in 2004! Another Isle of Man Winner Sue Biggart looks to be a strong contender.
Local interest is invested in Internationals Cath Duhig, King's Lynn's Sportswoman of the year (Silver medallist in 2003, in 21Hrs 27mins), who could place in the medals if on form, & Kevin Marshal, who is an ever improving athlete & looking to go under
20 Hours for the 100 miles.
13 other local entrants are taking up the challenge including David Toms from Brandon, Len Crockford (Fenland AC) Rob & Susan Christopher (K.Lynn) Garry George(Blackborough End) Nick Hopkin & Michael James (K.Lynn) Alex Napp & Christine O'Keefe (Watlington) Ian Smith (West Winch) Patricia Nevin (Hunstanton) Amanda Barnes, Noreen Partridge & Fiona Chapman (K.Lynn)
Fred Delves (W.Norfolk AC) Luke Harman & Joan Gill (Ryston Rnrs)
Organiser Peter Duhig is hoping for dry pleasant weather & a warm balmy night
All participants will get a meal served at anytime that they finish during the 24 hours. Certificates for all finishers will be posted out after the event with results.
Competitors will receive a participation medal & a unique memento will be given to 100 Mile finishers within the 24 hours.
If you really can't face the thought of 100 miles there is a TWILIGHT TWENTY mile race which joins the walkers at 10pm at night (entries taken on the day £10) just to get a taste of the event.
The Mayor of King's Lynn & West Norfolk B.C. will be starting events at 1pm on Sat 30th July making presentations at 2pm the next day 31st July.
