Slashdot points to an interesting article on SGI's attempt (another one) at a turnaround. But the real story is embedded in the story: With its so-called Reality Centers, SGI can woo customers with a screen of Imax-like proportions, where visitors can see its number-crunching computers run a flight training program and feel as if they are in the cockpit. Another application shows a global satellite feed of Kabul, Afghanistan. While visitors cannot see current live satellite footage, as military users would, SGI's powerful supercomputers can take that data and simulate an attack on Kabul, or show how certain weather conditions could impact a potential attack.
Indeed, War is good for the American economy. SGI is also part of the winning team for a bid to produce 3000 joint strike fighter aircraft. Again, that's three thousand planes that easily cost 100 million dollars each.
No wonder Dubya is trying to get every nation in the European Union to join up with the JSF production. He's about to have a full wharehouse and will be open for business worldwide.

The Felix Awards. I really miss NY and the Village Voice, sure you can read it online, but getting the paper version of Michael Musto at his bitchy best, handing out dishonorable mentions to a variety of media and showbiz faux pas is the epitome of being a New Yorker. You go girl! [MetaFilter]

NFL parity blitzes 'MNF' ratings. Come back to the NFL, Joe Montana, John Elway and Dan Marino. Where have you gone, America's Team? The combination of a lack of household-name superstars and parity that has turned Super Bowl teams into also-rans and elevated mediocre franchises to contenders has given the networks -- especially ABC -- huge headaches during recent years. Nowhere is that more clear than with ABC's "Monday Night Football," for which ratings have fallen through the floor. Sorry guys, but as long as there's a war tp cover, TV adcertising will be a crrappy business, and this war is gonna last a while. Not just because 'terror' and 'evil' are impossible to completely annihilate....war is a profitable business. [Media]
