What was hot and what was not in the year 2001?

The Year-End Google Zeitgeist feature provides an overview of what captivated the world over the past 12 months, based on its most popular search terms.

Some interesting results...Loft Story beats Big Brother....

235 Bodies Recovered in Lima Fire. Firefighters dug through the rubble Sunday of a massive blaze sparked by a fireworks explosion in historic downtown Lima just four blocks from Congress, retrieving 235 bodies by early afternoon. This is so tragic, especially since last year over 200 kids were burned in Holland on New Year's day.

I have my own fireworks story. I was about 11 or 12 and was invited to stay with a schoolfriend and his parents in a vacation bungalow. His 7 year old brother was there as well. We had a cardboard box of fireworks that we had brought along for the new year's festivities. We had it up in the loft bed and like a complete moron I decide to demonstrate my skill in lighting a ladyfinger and pulling out the fuse before it pops.

Of course it had a flash fuse, sparks dropped into the box and we witnessed the scariest 15 minutes of our lives (at that point in time) as rocktes whizzed around the bungalow, smoke filled the place instantly.

We were lucky to get out alive and unhurt except for one or two minor burns.

I haven't touched fireworks since.

Economist.com: IT is everywhere. Some 380m people speak it as their first language and perhaps two-thirds as many again as their second. A billion are learning it, about a third of the world's population are in some sense exposed to it and by 2050, it is predicted, half the world will be more or less proficient in it. It is the language of globalisation, of international business, politics and diplomacy. It is the language of computers and the Internet.

I wrote a couple of long letters to friends this morning. Kind of a fresh start for the New year, wrapping up crap from 2001.

I think I'll destill some of my private comments into public ones later today.

It's snowing again.
