> Steven Garrity: An open letter to the web design community: Why should I redesign my site with Cascading Style Sheets?

Dave Winer (in private email to Mark, cc'ed to Steven): So, if I read this correctly, there's no way that Garrity could *not* be a snake oil salesman. If you were ruler of the universe, there would be nothing he could do that you would approve of. Is this correct?

Mark Pilgrim: Suffice to say that I have no idea why I deserve such a vitriolic response over what I considered a very civil, very reasoned argument... ...I've shared all of that knowledge with everyone, free of charge. Anyone who doesn't appreciate it, please stop reading.

Mark is (mostly) right, Steven is (mostly) wrong.

  1. CSS does not exclude user-resizeable fonts.

  2. XHTML 4.01 does not exist. HTML 4.01 does. XHTML 1.0 does. Me thinks Mr. Garrity be a we bit confused. ;-)

  3. The semantic web will never happen on the client side if the content isn't delivered in a flexible format -- one that degrades gracefully.

With some perspective I don't think Dave's email to Mark was really "vitriolic". He's just trying to figure things out. It's natural that he would want to directly compare seemingly opposing views.   1:52:34 PM  Link
