Drivel:  I didn't truly understand the prestige associated with the New York Times being available through Radio until I read this from one of Dave's posts this morning and saw some of the historical links he posted.  I grew up in the small town of Longview, Washington.  We didn't have a New York Times equivalent on the West Coast that I was exposed to.

"A personal note on today's news. As I've probably said many times before, I grew up reading the NY Times. To me, they defined, as a young man, how an intelligent person with a curious mind approaches the world."  11:40:16 PM   comments ()

Drivel:  Another dandy service impairment from Yahoo!  I received this in an email from them this evening.  What the heck are they thinking charging people $29.99 a year for POP3 access and 5MB of disk space?  Heck, I'll just go and pay Microsoft $10 a year for 10MB of disk space for Hotmail.  Yahoo! is not providing any value add when it comes to email.  The barriers to leaving them for email service are relatively low, particularly when you can use another email address with their other services.  IMHO, Yahoo! is screwing up all over the place.  Are they really this desperate?  They just lost one email customer.

Drivel:  The guys over at Jabber very quietly submitted the Jabber protocol spec to the IETF last month.  It's a great submission and fairly easy to read for an IETF submission.  12:38:29 AM   comments ()

Drivel:  I am just about ready to make the transition from Windows to a complete Linux environment on all of my machines.  It has been a lot of work to get this far, but it is all there and not having to pay Microsoft's licensing fees every year will be welcome relief.  I have all types of network access -- dial-up, wireless, and ethernet.  I have complete MS Office compatibility via StarOffice.  I have more choices for IDEs than you can shake a stick at.  All forms of communication are available -- IM, email, video, and audio.  The only thing holding me back from making the jump is Radio and Frontier.  Two things I can't live without.  So, I will stand poised for the moment UserLand ships a Linux port.  12:28:31 AM   comments ()

Drivel:  StarOffice is gaining momentum.  It is nearly feature compatible with Microsoft Office and even supports saving and importing in most MS Office file formats.  I have used it, though not extensively.  The only thing it is lacking is huge install base, which will come as Linux gains momentum on the desktop.
