Check out 802.11 Networking News about UWB and WiFi, RF interference and competition

Glenn Fleishman yesterday posted
an excellent piece about 802.11, ultrawideband technology and interference in his 802.11b Networking News Weblog.  I subscribe to Prof. David Farber's "interesting people" news group which features a wealth of items about the Internet and wireless.  For the past several days comments have been flying back and forth about UWB, 802.11 and the status of Amateur Radio in an FCC ruling.  I've forwarded a few of the more detailed comments to Glenn and he wrote a great column.

Anyone who is [still] stupid enough to think Weblogs (some of them, at least) don't contain valuable information hasn't read 802.11b Networking News.

Waving to Cingular

I'm flying today to Orlando for Cingular Wireless' WAVE 2002 conference.  For the first time in a long time I will be computerless at a conference.  My trusty ThinkPad is not so trusty and has to be sent to IBM for repair.  Something about a CRC1 error.  Bad news indeed.  I have a 1.7-lb. Casio, but it seems the battery is dead, really dead.  Another laptop has a frayed power cord.  So my productivity will be reduced.  I feel naked.

Perhaps I should get one of those tri-fold keyboards and landline modem for my Compaq IPAQ, just for these emergency situations.  I have a compact flash WiFi card, but no modem.

There will not, I believe, be WiFi access at the conference.  I would feel even worse if 802.11 access were available, and I don't have a computer.  I do, however, have my two-way RIM pager and that has an Intel 80386 processor, so I'm not totally landline-locked.

Interesting information

The Cingular show should be interesting.  Cingular has the nationwide packet data network, Mobitex, cellular systems using TDMA and GSM and is trying to standardize on GSM.  It will take a few years before this all comes together.  Although the conference is an showcase for Cingular, there will be chances to talk one-on-one with top executives of the company as well as talking to some interesting partners.  For example, I think Good Technology will be at WAVE 2002 and I haven't seen its new pager and software solutions.

Also, I have a very interesting meeting with a company involved in offering telecommunications services to conference centers and hotels.  More on this later, if/when I'm able to discuss the company's plans.

Overall, Orlando will be a great, albeit hectic, learning experience.  It's one of the reasons I enjoy being a consultant.  I get to learn lots of stuff, spend time pondering everything and then figure out how to develop new or enhance existing wireless data businesses.
