Hawking Alters Theory of Black Holes. Astrophysicist Stephen Hawking says he's having second thoughts about his previous theories on the behavior of black holes. He now says he believes they do not consume everything that comes within their gravitational field, but instead can emit matter and energy in "mangled form" after holding them for eons.
