Userland is getting into the Frontier/Manila hosting business

Priced at $1099 complete (even less for qualifying academic institutions), no other content management system combines the capabilities, usability, and value of UserLand Manila. For those users who don't require their own in-house system, UserLand now offers Hosted Manila enabling low-cost, high-impact hosted websites with all the power and functionality of Manila starting as low as $299 per year. In addition, for those organizations desiring help getting started with a new Manila system, our Professional Services Group is ready to assist with project scoping, installation, customization and training...

Interesting. So, finally Userland is getting into the hosting business (again). After cutting down on all their free hosting services (editthispage, manilasite,...) over the last few years, Userland is now trying to set up a new income source through hosting its Frontier/Manila package. [Sebastian Fiedler]

Interesting news, ES Designs now has a hosting competitor that is charging premium rates. At Userland's prices, they must be focusing on users who don't think the can get an enterprise weblog solution for under $1100. For the rest of us, ES Designs and other Manila hosting services provide hosting at rates that are far more affordable for small business, non-profit and educational groups. Check us out.

Pair of Kenyans battle to end

SANTA CRUZ - Shadrack Kosgei knew he had won.

But he was the only one.

In the best finish in the Wharf to Wharf's 32-year history, the 19-year-old Kenyan edged his countryman Wilson Kigen at the tape after an all-out sprint down the hill into Capitola.

Kosgei and Kigen shared the top time of 27 minutes, 51 seconds. [Santa Cruz Sentinel]

Michele and I were on hand to watch the runners pass near the 5 mile mark. It is amazing to see the top runners go by. The first two mile splits were 4:36 and 4:40. For some perspective, my quickest mile in high school was 4:40.

The Wharf to Wharf is a lot of fun to witness. Michele was playing with the Blue and Red Circus Band at their typical spot near Pleasure Point.

A lot of runners enjoy listening to the band as they stream by. According to the Sentinel article even the top runners enjoy the music, quoting runner-up Wilson Kigen:

"It was motivating me a lot," Kigen said.

Ted Turner: Break Up Big Media.
  • Ted Turner: My Beef With Big Media. As a business proposition, consolidation makes sense. The moguls behind the mergers are acting in their corporate interests and playing by the rules. We just shouldn't have those rules. They make sense for a corporation. But for a society, it's like over-fishing the oceans. When the independent businesses are gone, where will the new ideas come from? We have to do more than keep media giants from growing larger; they're already too big. We need a new set of rules that will break these huge companies to pieces.
  • (Cross-posted to We the Media.) [Dan Gillmor's eJournal]

An interesting read, with compelling arguments against media consolidation.
