on to the next Okay, enough of dwelling on the disasters. Time to move on to the next cool thing. I've been having a lot of fun with GarageBand. I know I've been saying that a lot, but it's true. I've always enjoyed music, and have dabbled at creating music. GarageBand lets me put things together a lot quicker, and lets me include instruments that I don't necessarily know how to play. It's so easy to drag a percussion loop into the mix, maybe add some rhythm guitar or something else, and just start having fun. I'm finding myself reverting back to basic principles, thinking back to my piano lessons, doodling major scales (figuring out where the sharps and flats go) and actually understanding the music theory that I'd learned before. I actually somewhat understand the circle of fifths now! I find myself wanting a keyboard again. We had a baby grand when I grew up, and I had a Roland D-50 for a while (I sold it to my then-roommate, who is a keyboard player), but currently I have nothing of the like. I went to the local Apple Store, and it turns out that the two keyboards that Apple was advertising as part of the initial GarageBand release are now all sold out until March. The guy at the store confidentially referred us to a local music store that carried equivalent keyboards, and so we did. In what is certainly a cascade effect, they were sold out of USB/MIDI keyboards as well. They will be getting a shipment today, so we'll see what happens.
I'm not sure it's a good thing to get involved in something that allows
me to acquire a whole new category of gadgets. |
