random bits

When the Yankees pick up A-Rod, you figure it's just par for the course. The Yankees are always going to be big gorillas, and they always seem to have the World Series locked up before the season even begins. Heck, 1/4 of all of the World Series titles have been won by the Yankees, and that also means that they've appeared in more than 25% of them, since they didn't win every Series in which they played. And, more to the point, there's no guarantee that they will win. Here's hoping that they don't win.

My wife and I took a long weekend and the Sylvia Beach Hotel, staying in the Melville room one night, and finishing up in the Agatha Christie room. We had never been in the Agatha Christie room before, and I think it's my new favorite. Ocean views, private deck, it was wonderful. Waking up to see the huge ocean waves breaking on the shore was one of those moments that sticks with you. We spent our time lounging about and reading. It was exactly what we needed.

Since I am an airplane freak, we stopped at the Evergreen Aviation Museum, because I wanted to get a look at the Spruce Goose. The damn thing is HUGE, so much so that your eye loses all sense of scale. They had to build a big building to hold it, and the other planes, even the big ones, seemed like toys in comparison. They had an SR-71 right next to it that looked tiny. The B-17G looked like a model until you got close. They also had an F-102 Delta Dagger (which has current events relevance if you do a little poking around).

All in all, with the exception of the A-Rod news, a good weekend.
