core mac os x programming

I picked up the Core Mac OS X Programming book from the Big Nerd Ranch. You know, the one that costs more than you expect it to.

If you have experience coding on a Unix system, there is a bit of the book that would be of no use to you. The focus of the book is to bring Mac programmers up to speed on the Unix and ystem side of things, and as such needs to cover some aspects that would be redundant for people coming from the Unix side of things (like me).

The Mac-specific parts are good, though. I haven't read the book in depth yet (it arrived last night) so Im not going to go into detail yet, but the Table of Contents (which you can see here) should give you an idea of what will be useful to you and what will be redundant.

I'm glad the book's been discounted. Not that it isn't worth $100 -- it's tough to assess the real value of a technical book. The good ones are a bargain at any price, and this one has information you aren't going to get anywhere else. But I loved telling my wife I paid $65 for it, and then pointing at the price on the book ($97 and change) to show her that I got a bargain.

The things we do to support our habits...
