chandler

After the realization that GMail is playing in almost the same area that Agenda was and Chandler is, I made a point to revisit Chandler and see what the 0.3 release is all about.

Well, slight correction. I did download and run 0.3, but almost immediately after that I checked out a current copy of the CVS tree and did a full build, just to see what was on the bleeding edge.

Chandler has certainly made progress. There are a lot of good ideas in there, the persistence layer, the schema, the repository browser, and I can see how they are going to get to the finish line from here. But it is far from being anything that is useable by anybody other than a developer (and to be fair, that is exactly what they say when you download and start it up).

They call the bits of code and data that create new data types "parcels." I'm tyring to dream up parcel ideas, and looking over the source code for the system. If there is something that catches my eye, or some idea that grabs me, I'd like to help. It'd be cool to be part of the Chandler project, even if that part was third party parcel creator. Of course, being part of the OSAF would also be cool. But I'm not holding my breath just yet.

There's a lot of potential in Chandler. I hope it turns into what I think it can turn into.
