« Lou Harrison, requiescat in pacem »
I'm sorry to say that I didn't know until this morning, when I read John Rockwell's piece in the today's NY Times, that Lou Harrison died a week ago today. (Rockwell also wrote an obit.) Harrison was one of the great American composers of the 20th century. It took me until my late-20's to really start to appreciate his music, which is tonal, sensual, and beautiful. In my earlier days I had had a penchant for "difficult" (i.e., abstract, atonal) music that had more to do with attitude than anything else, but as I learned to appreciate melody and consonance, he became one of my favorite modern composers. My wife and I had the priviledge of meeting him at the McDowell Colony a few summer ago, when he visited to attend a concert of his music and receive a medal for his lifetime achievements. I'm sorry that he is gone, but happy that he lived a long life and left a large body of work that will endure.
