Don't give up investing - -- - get smart. ``Will you ever be able to retire?'' [Business]

Very good advice, particularly on investing for the long term in large growth, large value, small growth, small value and international. This is always a good start.  10:53:39 PM

How WorldCom filed for bankruptcy on a Sunday.

Denise Howell explains how WorldCom filed for bankruptcy on a Sunday, using electronic filing features available in the United States Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of New York.

[Rory Perry's Radio Weblog]

Now the Internet makes it easier to file the largest bankruptcy in history. WHo would have thought:-)  10:38:56 PM

And Congress wants to let Hollywood do this?. Dan Gillmor: "If you or I asked Congress for permission to legally hack other people's computers, we'd be laughed off Capitol Hill. Then we'd be investigated by the FBI and every other agency concerned with criminal violations of privacy and security." [Scripting News] [Mac Net Journal]

It is scary to contemplate how far Congress will go before it realizes what it is doing.  10:28:27 PM

Is the American public at increased risk for food poisoning?. Walking into a fast food restaurant or a seafood diner could be a high risk proposition. Most people would scoff at that notion but for 8,000 Americans last year, eating contaminated food led to death. [EurekAlert - Medicine & Health]

Food poisoning is going to be a real problem as more antibiotic-resistant bacteria spread. Biotechnology and the knowledge of the genomes of organisms, combined with the creativity of people, are the best paths to adapting to these bacteria.  10:23:22 PM

Using Blogs in Business: "There is great potential for business weblog use, from project-based team weblogs to the constant churn of content through a weblog on a corporate site. This chapter shows you different ways you can use weblogs in your business, and also examines the benefits of doing so. At the end of this chapter, a tutorial steps you through the process of creating a topic-specific business weblog." [From the Desktop of Dane Carlson]

Nice way to write a book.  10:01:46 PM

The Web didn't kill libraries. It's the new draw: "By now, public libraries should have been starting to check out. Computers, and the Internet in particular, were expected to have started rendering printed books and magazines obsolete. The sort of research that once required consultation with a librarian would be done instead with the help of Yahoo or Google, technology enthusiasts wrote. And yet, rather than lead to the demise of libraries, the World Wide Web may have turned out to be a their saving grace. The Internet is fueling an increase in library use which, in turn, has led to a library-construction and renovation boom." [From the Desktop of Dane Carlson]

Librarians are not the old spinster sterotype but becoming the human equivalent of the old science fiction universal computer.  9:57:19 PM

Intranets need team players. This is the title of an excellent article in New Media Zero by Steve Lodewyke of Think Lateral. This short... [Intranet Focus Blog]

Absolutely right in so many ways.  9:50:20 PM

Watching the Scarlet Pimpernel with Richard E. Grant while I blog. Not as foppish as Leslie Howard but really fun to watch.  9:48:08 PM

Portals and intranets. I read with interest an article in Computerworld, 10 July, based on an interview with Chris Reckling, senior production manager,... [Intranet Focus Blog]

If someone says they want to control the intranets so users have the same experience, run,run away. Information dispersal and the creation of knowledge cannot be controlled. They are the emergent properties of a chaotic system. Control often strangles creativity.  9:43:22 PM

Mark Twain. "I don't give a damn for a man that can only spell a word one way." [Quotes of the Day]

Friedrich Nietzsche. "The advantage of a bad memory is that one enjoyes several times the same good things for the first time." [Quotes of the Day]

Oscar Wilde. "Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much." [Quotes of the Day]

I love Quotes of the Day.  9:34:57 PM

Summer Social for WABIO

I may have to check this out since it is just down the street from me at the Columbia Winery.  6:16:59 PM

Looks like I can spend a lot of time here.  5:35:57 PM

I may have to get a 20 Gbyte iPod. I filled up my 10 gig and I had tons of stuff left over. I want to have ALL my music on the device. (Listening to Blue Highway singing 'Hung My Head'. I love working to Bluegrass.). Of course, I now have over 5 days worth of music so I just put it on shuffle and I get the best radio station I ever heard. It always plays my favorites. I wonder how it knows ;-)  5:34:17 PM

Some quick research related job sites.

Of course one of prime things I have to do is decide what I want to do ;-) While I would not mind working at another small biotech, I also want to pursue other areas. The Internet makes it so much easier to transfer information and create knowledge. I want to help biotech companies realize this. A small company (less than 100) can move information very rapidly and create knowledge. A larger company can not and often has to adopt inefficient hierarchies to help deal with the large flow of information. Tools like Radio reverse this trend, allowing companies to grow much larger before they need a hierarchy, which might be never.

I also love to write and want to use my ability to talk, interact, and act as a bridge with a diverse group of people. I got some of the best positive feedback for the 'My View' column I wrote for the in-house newsletter I wrote. So, science writing is another avenue. I may examine these nonstandard routes firts.  5:14:23 PM

I have created a category on my Job search. It'll list the sites and tools that I find while performing this dreaded activity. I've already got a ton of them to post.  5:06:16 PM

Well, the M's lost. They just can not hit good pitching (most teams can't) but that is all they will see in the post season, so they had better figure out a way. Onward.  4:26:37 PM
