The Ever-Mendacious Wall Street Journal Editorial Page. You never read the Wall Street Journal's editorial page expecting it to tell any story honestly and straightforwardly. For example, if you took the editorial below at face value, you would believe that lawsuits against U.S. Technologies' [the "company being sued for possible fraud"] and its CEO Gregory Earls are "phony," for "trial lawyers sue good companies every day alleging 'fraud'." And if you believed this, you would be wrong. As every reader of yesterday's Washington Post's business section knows--but... [Semi-Daily Journal]

Another example of the foxes watching the hen house, with the coyotes doing the reporting. The man in charge of investigating corporate malfeasance should not have been involved with firing auditors because their honest report caused the company problems.  4:50:12 PM

NYT.  A US judge approved the politically motivated MS-DOJ settlement.

This proves one thing.  As a society, we are still in denial about corporate abuses of power.  Law, like any other system is prone to distortion by the views of the people that apply it.

However, this decision is the end result of the previous decision to settle the case.  The debacle of the DOJ/MS settlement, given the copious evidence to demonstrate abuse, shows that this adminstration (a nice way of saying BUSH) is in favor of business as usual.  Unfortunately that means corporate greed and malfeasance is here to stay.  Given our present economic circumstance, another round of scandal is likely to plunge us into a Japanese scenario.  That is a situation where a country is so unable to reform itself that it continues to select stagnation rather than face the pain that will result in growth.   It is a country were the general good is overcome by the needs of a select few. [John Robb's Radio Weblog]

Robb says it so well. More people want to see Martha Stewart go down than CEOs. MS is on eo many and I believe that 30 years from now they will not understand why an administration would cave in to a proven monpolist. Or maybe they will. We have an SEC bringing in arguably corrupt people to supervise business corruption. We could take a path that would be painful but get us healthier faster. But we will take a slower path that will prolong the pain. I just hope that 10 years is as long as it takes. Because I still think it will get worse before it gets better.  4:13:41 PM

Football player kisses homecoming game goodbye

This is a reason thinking people have so little respect for scholl authorities. So, lip-to-lip lissing is bad but so is lip-to-forehead. How about lip-to-hand? Lip-to-elbow? Now how distracting is it for all of this to be published in the paper? For the principal and school administration to look like idiots in the press? Are they going to suspend everyone who talks about this at school, because that will be much more distracting.

When I was in high school, we had a pretty rigid hair code. As a male, your hair could not touch the color of your shirt or your ears. This was pretty standard in the district. So much so that when a boy grew his hair out so it would cover up a head disfigurement, he was told to cut it off. Really stupid. So, at my school, we had a very smart guy with very curly red hair. He grew it out into a really nice 'fro. He was very careful to make sure it did not touch his collar or his ears, but, of course, his hair was very distracting, at least to the ex-Marine who was the principal. So he called this guy in and order him to get his hair cut. Even though it complied with all the rules.

The main problem rule-bound bureaucrats have is with people that creatively get around their rules. So, the next day this student showed up with his head shaved. No one had ever done this before and there was absolutely nothing they could do.His bald head was more distracting than the previous 'fro but there was no way they could suspend him until it grew back. It is because of instances like this that many dress codes were done away with. The administrators were just unable to creatively deal with any problems.  4:01:21 PM

We had the latest First Friday for Immunex employees so no post on Nov. 1. Yesterday was a day of rest. Cut the grass and took my son to see the Woman's Gold Cup soccer games at Safeco. This makes a really nice soccer venue and the games were reallyfun. US at Panama 9-0 even playing a player down for much of the second half. We froze our tails off though, even with lots of warm blankets.  9:07:21 AM
