From Wolf to Dog, Yes, but When?. Three studies shed light on the questions of when, where and how dogs were first domesticated from wolves. By Nicholas Wade. [New York Times: Science]

More about the origin of dogs but with more detail. Fascinating.  11:39:20 PM

Stone Age man kept a dog [Nature Science Update]

Assuming that the mitochondrial data are correct (there is some indications that some male mitochondria may 'contaminate' the hitherto pristine maternal lineage of this organelle) man domesticated the dog quite some time ago. This fits with the probable fact that it was the first animal we domesticated. Wolves have very strong social constraints in their behavior, making it easy to assume a dominate position that fits their genetic program. What will be interesting is examining how they have coevolved with us over the last 10,000 years or so. I would expect that comparing their genome with wolves at a deeper level will give us some understanding of this, since wolves will not be under the same selective pressure.  11:33:32 PM

Everyone's pointing to Gar's Tips on Sucks-Less Writing.. For a good reason. Blogging is mostly writing. Writing better, extracting suckiness from your craft, makes for better blogs. Do me a favor; slap me upside the head if you notice me straying to far from readable, useful, interesting, and fun writing.  Wham! [a klog apart]

Lots of useful hints, presented in a nice format. I've figured most of them out but they are priceless nonetheless.  11:12:33 PM

WHy am I not surprised? Again, iy does not affect the Mac.  11:05:39 PM

Having a few problems with upstreaming. I hope they are fixed.  9:45:56 PM

We had nice weather again today. I do not know what is happening but if global warming makes the weather like California then I may have to head North, since LA will be really intolerable and everyone down there will be moving North.  8:54:59 PM
