In the New Yorker's. book section, actual intelligent discussion of science fiction--and why Michael Crichton's work isn't, in a significant sense, SF. [Crichton... [Electrolite]
This is spot on. Crichton is like riding a roller coaster. It is a lot of fun and very scary while you are on it. Then it ends and you get off, pretty much in the same shape as when you started. The best science fiction takes the premise to a logical conclusion, with results that can have effects on much more than the few people populating the story. I loved that Andromeda strain up to the point that it just vanished. Boy, were we lucky. I felt a little cheated, as if the bowl of eyeballs turned out to be peeled grapes from a Halloween fun house. 11:21:39 PM

I had a wonderful Thanksgiving. The indoor soccer team I coach had an amazing game today. Most of the boys are U13, but we have one U-12. We played a much bigger U-14 team. At this age, one year can make a huge difference. A couple of the boys on the other team were bigger than me. We got the first goal then the other team got it together enough to get 3 unanswered ones. Then we came back with 2 of our own. At one point, I thought we might be on the ropes but the boys found some inner reserve and just dominated. It ended with a 3-3 tie but with us putting on a lot of pressure to score the winner. What a great game! 11:11:02 PM
