Okay, here is the answer to my son's problem. You always know that the winner's pot is doubled after each round. Since you know that both Juan and Bob won the third round, yet had $12, then they must have had $6 after the second. SInce you know that David lost the last round, gave $6 to each of the other players, leaving himself with $12, he must have had $24 after the second round. You can now apply the same logic to what each had after the first round and finally what they had to begin with. It is then a simple matter to see that Juan lost the most money, starting with $19.50 and ending with $12. The others actually made money.
Round 3 | Round 2 | Round 1 | Start | |
12 | 24 | 12 | 6 | David |
12 | 6 | 21 | 10.5 | Ben |
12 | 6 | 3 | 19.5 | Juan |
My son was the only one who got it right in his class. He got a nice smile out of the teacher explaining how his dad worked on it for an hour and a half and could not get it (a slight exaggeration). 8:30:25 PM
