The Game of Life
Exploring emergence is one of the most fascinating sites I have stumbled upon in a long while. Very simple rules that lead to surprising outcome and interesting patterns. [mark finnern: future]
I love this kind of thing. This is a very good Java implementation of Conway's Game of Life, written up very well. It was actually a piece I read somewhere about Conway that got me curious about computers, back in 1980 or so. I wrote some versions in Basic on the Apple II, and much later wrote one in AppleScript on the Mac, using Scriptable Text Editor as an out put device! Gad, was it slow. If you have half an hour or so, this is really interesting. At its heart, this is what Stephen Wolfram's Emergence is all about.

From the Duh Files
From [Dog News: weird, inspiring dog tales]:
Candice Bergen 'debunks' Pet Psychic Candice Bergen recounts her visit with Animal Planet's The Pet Psychic host, Sonya Fitzpatrick: "Sonya has tremendous presence," she said, "but we had lots of dogs there for her to talk to and I was kind of hoping for specifics... but nothing." [TV Guide News Gossip ] Hmm, real psychics and psychic pets do exist, so I'm not so sure.
Well, I've enjoyed some of the stuff I've seen from Dog News, but when I see a line like "real psychis and psychic pets do exist," I know I'm in the wrong place, and it's time for me to unsubscribe, so I have.
