ACLU Action Alert: TIPS
In one of the most misguided responses to the terrorist attacks, President Bush is proposing a program to recruit one million volunteers to act as spies and informants against their neighbors. Under the proposed program, the government would recruit letter carriers, utility workers, cable installers, and others whose jobs allow them access to private residences to report suspicious, ostensibly terrorist-related activity.
The Wall Street Journal had an editorial yesterday saying the ACLU was being hysterical and this was much ado about nothing. Nothing could be further from the truth. Though it looks like this thing won't get far, help make sure of it by following the link & sending a message to your Senators.

More on Steve Earle
This is the link to the full lyrics of Steve Earle's song about John Walker Lindh. It's a different song than the hysterical news reports first said, it doesn't say when he dies he "will rise up and go to heaven." Of course Earle's too smart for that. From Lindh's point of view, it says "I'll rise up like Jesus and go to heaven." That's very different thing, very different. Earles up to something different, and I'm looking forward to the song.

Library Journal: Copyright in the Balance. Q&A with Lawrence Lessig. We need to be much more aggressive in calling people on this rhetoric, because it's just wrong. It's just not the case that copyright has ever been understood to mean that if you use a copyrighted work in a way unintended by the copyright owner that's "theft." [Tomalak's Realm]

Military Dodger in Chief
Photocopy of the document suspending Dubya from flying service in 1972. Reason: "failure to accomplish medial examination." And the righties called Clinton names. Of course, Gore, Kerry and other Dems had some distinguished Vietnam records. Dubya, Newt, Cheney, dodged the service. But they're the "patriots." Sigh. [goodshit]
