Back to the moon?
Friend of my childhood John Wise sends me link to this National
Review article saying that Bush is planning on proposing a return to the moon.
I don't know how likely this proposal is, though I do imagine that it's
pretty unlikely that we'll actually do it. Bush's deficits are rising
by the day, and the way the tax cut is backloaded, they're only going
to grow. Also, as the piece says, Democrats now will probably argue
with him if he says the sky is blue; I know I feel pretty much that
way. And the cynical side of me thinks is not likely that he'll propose
it because there's no oil on the moon (no matter what the Weekly World
News says), and Haliburton, so far as I know, is not involved in space.
That said, a return to the moon is about the most exciting thing I can
imagine us doing. The space station and shuttle don't really have a
reason to exist, and Mars is too far away. There's a lot to be learned
on the moon, about the earth, the early solar system, etc. And we could
build some mighty nifty telescopes in the moon's shadow from the earth.
So while I really doubt this will happen, I really hope it will...
