Putting God Back in Politics. By withdrawing into secularism, the Democrats deprive Americans of an important debate. By Jim Wallis. [New York Times: Opinion]

The gist of this is that the Democrats are uncomfortable talking about religion, so it's left to the Republicans. This makes sense. It allows the Republicans to wrap themselves in religion and claim divine support for their policies. In their silence, the Democrats effectively cede the religious argument and grant the Republican's point.

Elvis Mitchell's ten best movies of 2003. [Scripting News]

I don't have to pick 10. So I'll just list my favorites, not in order: Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World; The Return of the King; Winged Migration; Lost in Translation; The 25th Hour; and, yes, Masked & Anonymous.

Information, Please.

Sez here that "The FBI is warning police nationwide to be alert for people carrying almanacs." Why almanacs? Because "the popular reference books covering everything from abbreviations to weather trends could be used for terrorist planning."

Here's a notable paragraph from the same wire: "The FBI noted that use of almanacs or maps may be innocent, 'the product of legitimate recreational or commercial activities.' But it warned that when combined with suspicious behavior -- such as apparent surveillance -- a person with an almanac 'may point to possible terrorist planning.'"

[Hit & Run]
The FBI come in under the wire with the stupidest thing written this year.

The 10 Dumbest Quotes of 2003 [FARK]
Good stuff, but the Rumsfeld quote doesn't belong there. It makes perfect sense, and I have to question those who call it stupid or say it doesn't make sense.
