Interview with Sir Arthur C. Clarke. Today is the 86th bithday of Sir Arthur C. Clarke, famed science-fiction author who is remembered as the originator of the idea for synchronous-orbit communications satellites. One World South Asia reports that on the eve of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), Clarke spoke with science writer Nalaka Gunawardene at his home in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Excerpted statements by Clarke from that interview: "I think it is technologically impossible for any one government to (directly) control, let alone ban, transmissions coming from earth orbit. Some countries have banned personal satellite dish antennas, others have experimented with Internet blocking, but in the long term, people will find ingenious ways to circumvent these controls." :::Today's Pick::: Unlocking creativity. On one hand, the "Gallery" is a portal to well-designed CSS-based websites. Scrivs has managed to post over 80 of them in less than two months, each with a screenshot and commentary. On the other hand, "Resources" (a great resource in itself) has dozens of categorized, commented links to all things CSS from tools to tutorials to layouts to image techniques. Nice design, useful resources, and inspiration for modern designers... [Coolstop Daily Pick]
