Heh.. At The Onion today:
Libertarian Reluctantly Calls Fire Department
CHEYENNE, WY—After attempting to contain a living-room blaze started by a cigarette, card-carrying Libertarian Trent Jacobs reluctantly called the Cheyenne Fire Department Monday. "Although the community would do better to rely on an efficient, free-market fire-fighting service, the fact is that expensive, unnecessary public fire departments do exist," Jacobs said. "Also, my house was burning down." Jacobs did not offer to pay firefighters for their service. [Hit & Run]

What a great post this is from the Raving Atheist. I don't agree totally with what he says -- heck, if atheism does
get the 'godly' to thinking at least a little bit rationally about
religion, then that's not all bad -- but in the main I do, and I love
the strong way he puts it, mincing no words. Huzzah!

It didn't happen. From today’s Washington Post:
The Pentagon deleted from a public transcript a statement Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld made to author Bob Woodward suggesting that the administration gave Saudi Arabia a two-month heads-up that President Bush had decided to invade Iraq.
At issue was a passage in Woodward’s “Plan of Attack,” an account published this week of Bush’s decision making about the war, quoting Rumsfeld as telling Prince Bandar bin Sultan, the Saudi ambassador to Washington, in January 2003 that he could “take that to the bank” that the invasion would happen…
Woodward supplied his own transcript showing that Rumsfeld told him on Oct. 23, 2003: “I remember meeting with the vice president and I think Dick Myers and I met with a foreign dignitary at one point and looked him in the eye and said you can count on this. In other words, at some point we had had enough of a signal from the president that we were able to look a foreign dignitary in the eye and say you can take that to the bank this is going to happen.”
We are hearing about this because the Administration directly contradicted a celebrity Post reporter about a hot news story, and the reporter kept his own records.

Even Republicans see Bush playing politics with Iraq. Just last month, the Bush campaign started running blistering attack ads against John Kerry, accusing him of opposing needed resources for our troops in Iraq. Ironically, now Republican lawmakers are saying the same thing about Bush. In a stunning front-page article today, the Washington Post notes that funding requests from the Pentagon have been ignored by the White House. By all indications, Bush, who claims to be unconcerned about polls, is afraid of the political consequences. The military already has identified unmet funding needs, including initiatives aimed at providing equipment... [The Carpetbagger Report]
