Mars Rover Finds Mysterious Rocks and More Signs of Water
Both rovers, the Spirit and the Opportunity, have more than doubled their intended lifetimes of three months. [The New York Times > Science]
Fascinating stuff. But what I noticed from this NY Times post was something I hadn't noticed before about the Times stylebook: they keep referring to the Mars Rovers as "the Opportunity" or "the Spirit." Strange, and it seems really awkward to me. I would think that "the" would go before a generic noun -- "the rover" and not before the particular proper noun. But on further reflection, maybe it does make sense. We talk about "the Enterprise" or "the Missouri" when itit comes to sailing (or interstellar) vessels.

$8.8 BILLION IN IRAQI FUNDS MISSING
REUTERS - At least $8.8 billion in Iraqi funds that was given to Iraqi ministries by the former U.S.-led authority there cannot be accounted for, according to a draft U.S. audit set for release soon. The audit by the Coalition Provisional Authority's own Inspector General blasts the CPA for ``not providing adequate stewardship'' of at least $8.8 billion from the Development Fund for Iraq that was given to Iraqi ministries. . . The development fund is made up of proceeds from Iraqi oil sales, frozen assets from foreign governments and surplus from the U.N. Oil for Food Program. Its handling has already come under fire in a U.N.-mandated audit released last month.
