Landowner Wins Big - Prevails in 'Taking' Case!. Mountain States Legal Foundation - Landowner Wins Big - Prevails in 'Taking' Case! - Dr. Larry Squires had his business shut down by the e.p.a. This was recently ruled a "taking", and he is due "just compensation". [market]
MSLF's victory in this important case is huge. It may be one of the first rulings in the country holding that a statute that protects species and their habitat causes a taking. Not surprisingly, many are thrilled: "Great news! [It] [h]olds promise for all of us in natural resources and agricultural production," enthused Roni Bell of LaSalle, Colorado.

This is good news for Dr. Squires, but I'm not optimistic about how much good it will do anyone else. The government generally ignores any laws or court decisions that restrain it. The EPA will just continue their Nazi tactics, because most property owners don't have the money or time to stand up to the entire government.

A Freedom Lover's Rant Against the Almighty State. John deLaubenfels at Strike the Root - A Freedom Lover's Rant Against the Almighty State - Wonderful! [market]
To those (and there are many today) who say that it is wrong to break any law, simply because it is the law, I would ask, is that the advice you would give to people who hid Jews in wartime Germany? Is that the advice you would give to members of the Underground Railroad who helped slaves escape in the 19th Century? Is that the advice you would give to Martin Luther King Jr., if you could speak to him in the '60s? All of these people made a conscious decision to break the law in service of a greater morality. Many risked imprisonment or death to do so.

Sniper Kills 10 More Israelis. Taking aim from a hilltop, a sniper killed 10 soldiers and civilians at a checkpoint Sunday in the deadliest of a two-day string of Palestinian attacks that killed 21 Israelis. [AP World News]

The sniper got away--this is much worse for Israel than the reporter realizes. Up to now, the Palestinian terrorists have been universally incompetent and stupid, and seemingly interested primarily in dying. Now there is at least one Palestinian out there who is both smart and competent, and not suicidal. I hope the Mossad can find him, because one good sniper can kill hundreds of soldiers--and a Palestinian won't restrict himself to killing soldiers.

Newsweek: The Customer Is Always Wrong. Steven Levy. The Disney Corp. was once celebrated for its crowd-pleasing recipe: underpromise and overdeliver. But Eisner and his copyright-holding counterparts, drinking deep from the fountain of fear, seem to have adopted a new motto: overcharge and disable. [Tomalak's Realm]

It's good to see a story like this in a (usually clueless) mainstream publication. Hopefully this will help convince all those people who aren't all that technical that the MPAA and RIAA are out of control.

Swiss Voters Narrowly OK Joining U.N.. Swiss voters approved joining the rest of the world Sunday as members of the United Nations after sitting on the global sidelines for more than five decades. [AP World News]

It's a shame that the Swiss have decided to reject their tradition of neutrality. They managed to keep it up for over 300 years, only to surrender it now for a terrible cause.
