I've just purchased a Steyr Scout Rifle from a gun store in Connecticut. Since my check has to get there, and the rifle has to then be shipped here, I probably won't actually receive it until sometime late next week. In the mean time, though, I'm looking for information on good quality .308 Winchester ammo. It's an interesting subject, and one which I have not previously done any research on. I'll probably buy a few boxes of various brands and experiment with them.

Enron's Long Shadow. The media, as well as the stateâs court intellectuals, love the Enron scandal and its continued fallout. It allows them the opportunity to broadcast on a daily basis the myth of market failure so as to justify ever increasing levels of government intervention in our lives.ÊYet, this scandal was fueled by government intervention, not by market forces, and continuing this intervention because it furthers the cause of the political class simply lays the groundwork for greater debacles in the future.ÊIs anyone listening? Palestinians Seek Israel Withdrawal. Palestinian officials on Friday affirmed plans to hold general elections within six months, but linked the balloting ÷ the first in six years ÷ to an Israeli troop pullback and a lifting of sweeping travel restrictions. [AP World News]

If the Palestinians want the Israelis to withdraw, they don't need to hold elections. All they have to do is stop blowing up Israeli civilians. They could even continue blowing themselves up--I'm sure the Israelis wouldn't mind that, as long as they didn't hurt anyone else.

The Man Who Cracked The Code to Everything .... Steven Levy at Wired - The Man Who Cracked The Code to Everything ... - this is the story I quoted on Tuesday about Stephen Wolfram's new book, A New Kind of Science. [End the War on Freedom]

The article is actually quite interesting just for its description of Stephen Wolfram. I happen to be reading The Fountainhead at the moment, and I noticed that he sounds very much like a character from an Ayn Rand novel. I will certainly buy and read his book, even though I suspect I don't have the background to really understand it.

Climate chief defends independence. The new head of the world panel assessing climate change rejects charges that he is pro-oil industry. [BBC News: sci/tech]

He defends the Kyoto Protocol - designed to reduced human influence on the global climate - as being better than nothing, and says the panel's job is to provide compelling evidence for the need for countries to make new commitments to fight global warming.

I don't care if someone is pro-oil industry or not. I do think it would be an improvement if a scientist who is not anti-human had the post, but I do not think that is likely.
