Zimbabwe 'disaster' as famine looms. The Zimbabwean Government declares a state of disaster as food shortages threaten widespread starvation. [BBC News: world]

Another country destroyed by a communist leader--in this case, because Mugabe sent gangs of looters to destroy the country's farms. Hopefully people can flee the country. That wouldn't be easy, I'm sure, and the surrounding areas will no doubt be affected as well, but it's a little better than the situation in a totally closed-off country like North Korea, where the people are trapped.

Golda Meir, the former Israeli Prime minister, is quoted as saying "there will be peace in the Middle East only when the Arabs love their children more than they hate Israel". Every time I see pictures of Palestinian children waving guns and wearing dummy explosives, then I can only say she is right.

Argentine banks open their doors. Argentine banks reopen after a ten-day shutdown aimed at staving off financial collapse. [BBC News: world]

Senior government figures said the banking freeze, coupled with recent legal changes aimed at making it more difficult for savers to challenge restrictions on withdrawals, should save the banking system from collapse.

Perhaps an appropriate response would be for Argentine depositors to impose a banking freeze of their own. Anybody who's had their money stolen this way could refuse to pay back any bank loans until the banking restrictions are lifted.
