High Court Considers Drug Searches. There's little room to move around on a Greyhound bus, which is one reason that two men caught ferrying drugs say they didn't feel free to get up and leave when police stood over them in the aisle and started asking questions. [AP World News]

This is a more high-profile case of government thugs demanding to search and not giving any hint that their victims can say no.

The government "inspector" person was just here. He did indeed take no (or rather, "get a warrant") for an answer, after about six repititions. At no time did he inform me that I had the right to refuse him access--someone who didn't know better would almost certainly have been intimidated into letting him in. He tried to gain access by saying he was with the manager, who was exercising her right to inspect the apartment. I pointed out that I would be happy to allow the manager in, but not any government employees without search warrants. In fact, it's actually a little suspicious that we suddenly got a new manager on Friday who I've never met, replacing Mr. Kim who has been the manager the entire four years that I've lived here.

He also asked me why I was refusing to allow him to inspect my apartment--as if it shouldn't be obvious to any American! When I told him that it was an invasion of my privacy, he seemed amused. He asked for my name, which I gave as "the resident of apartment 202."

It remains to be seen if he'll truly accept my refusal, or if he'll come back with a warrant. Or perhaps more likely, try to sneak in another time when I'm at work.

I'm simply disgusted that anything like this could happen here. It's a very dramatic reminder that this country may call itself the United States of America, but it really isn't anymore.

AT&T Wireless Launches i-mode Service. Provides consumers with IM, mail, content [allNetDevices Wireless News]

The article mentions twelve test markets, but doesn't say where they are. Hopefully one of them is Los Angeles.
