Like Water for Bandwidth, by Xeni Jardin. In this weeks LA Weekly Xeni talks about info-fueling, wardriving and ribbons of connectivity: welcome to Los Angeles’ unwired future, as well as information on where WiFi is available in places like Santa Monica.
Tonight we served dinner to the 100 Hot Shot and Chopper Crews who were on their first off mountain break at Bracket Field. The HotShots work 12-24 hours straight before they are rotated off mountain. Because of security issues ala 9-11 they asked we didn't take pictures inside the field. But I was given permission to take pics of the huge Sikorsky Sky Cranes while they were refueling. They were going to go back up and continue dropping water tonight until at least midnight. If you want to see how they actually suck up the 3000 gals of water and do the drops go see Mike McMillian's SpotfireImages.com site here. It's really neat!
The neat thing I've noticed is that post 9-11 people are actually volunteering to help out tending to the firefighters who are doing all the work and taking the risk. The crews were surprised and very greatful for everything including the shampoo and soap one of the hotels sent over for them to clean up during the break. Tonight's menu consisted of full roast beef dinner donated by the local country club and all the water, soft drinks and coffee they could hold. It was the first real hot meal they had eaten since Tuesday. The guys told us how badly the fire had burned up the mountainside, and how much wildlife they had encountered, including a few unhappy rattlesnakes.
