The Bush, the Hussein, and the Ugly
First, I must make it clear that I have no issue with us having a war with Iraq. I think that getting rid of SH is a good thing. I expect a relatively short war, with a minimum of deaths on our side. I do not think that anti-war protest serve any purpose at this point, and support our troops, and the brave sacrifices they are making.
On the other hands I despise Bush in so many ways. This man has done us so much damage in the international community. His inane "Axis of Evil" speech was the start of our current problems with North Korea. Between Kyoto, Helsinki, and the ABM treaty, he has ignored, violated, and blocked international attempts to deal with many issues. His "Cowboy" image rubs most of the international community the wrong way. He may have 40 nations in our coalition, but most of them are late comers, and hangers on.
Colin Powell has already made it quietly clear that if Bush gets reelected in 2004, he will not serve in a second term. He has been ignored, marginalized and over ruled repeatedly by the hawks in this administration. GW's dad gave a speech a few weeks ago in which he stated that going to war without UN support would be a mistake. A Roman emperor had a favorite quote, "Let them hate us, as long as they fear us." That was said by Caligula, and seems to describe this administrations foreign policy pretty well.
We have seen the greatest attack on civil rights, and freedoms in many decades. Ashcroft, a extreme right wing fundamentalist is busy pushing his agenda of a police state. This is the guy who bought curtains to cover the exposed breast of a greek statue. He, and the administration have used this crises as a way to expand police power, and restrict protections against abuse by law enforcement. Did you know that you can be arrested based on the suspicion of association with a group that has terrorist ties. Your name does not have to be released, and your family publishing the facts of your arrest can result in their arrest. This should send a chill down your spine.
This administration is pushing us into the largest deficits in history. Their solution is to push for tax breaks that will give 90% of the cut to less then 1% of the american public. Late in the Clinton administration new banking regulations were put into place to deal with off shore money laundering, this administration canceled those regulations. This administration has no domestic economic policy except tax breaks for the wealthy, and corporations. None of these will do anything for the lower, and middle class. The Democrats may support welfare for the poor, but the Republicans support welfare for the rich and corporations.
This administration seems fixated on Iraq, at the expense of dealing with the real day-to-day issues of this nation...mj
