Thinking about this communication thing we do, and how to make it all work better, innit?

What Was Old Is New Again.
New to this site at least. In an effort to get related content on to the same site I have added some archived book reviews to the Reviews section. Coming next will be a few interviews from my Black+White magazine archives.

The Name Change & Why.
I was getting bored with karlpeter3’s weblog, so I figured it was time for a rethink. In fact there was no think when I originally set up my Radio 8 weblog as a tryout.
The name karlpeter3, which I use for my email accounts and my CD portfolio, is an expression of the fact that I’m in my third major career change now. Some experts are theorizing that most people will experience between 5 and 9 major career path changes in their lifetimes. The era when people retired with gold watch from the one job they’d had all their lives is gone forever. And a good thing too, although security is something to be treasured however we can get it.
The name karlpeter3 is recognition of this phoenix-like serial rebirth my working life has had. When I was pondering a better name the other day, the strongest image in my mind was a phoenix rising from the ashes. But I don’t particularly like warm colours, and the traditional phoenix+flames+ashes images are almost all dominated by yellows, oranges and reds.
Electric blue is my favourite colour, followed in order by acid green, then black, then midnight blue, then deep purple. If I believed in astrology, I would say “That figures” about my colour choices, as I am a Pisces.
So I resolved to eventually design a template for this weblog that features a phoenix, and all my preferred colours. I needed to find a demanding exercise to force me to spend more time with Illustrator, learning all its new chops, especially transparency and the gradient grid, so here it is now.

Sleep, Ahh Wonderful Sleep.
There’s been a lot of comment on various websites and in the print media lately about how we just don’t get enough sleep anymore. Most of us barely get 8 hours a day, and there’s a theory that we really need 12, given that before artificial light humans used to fall unconscious as soon as the sunlight vanished each day. Well, sorta.
I’m lucky if I can stay unconscious for even 6 hours a night. I’ve done everything I can to provide the necessary comforts—crisp white fine cotton sheets neatly ironed, a choice of duvets each with its own pure cotton cover, a heap of furry cushions in the corner, a selection of firm Tontine pillows on a futon in the middle of a bare but carpeted room, lots of light streaming in the windows. It’s not a conventional bedroom by any means, but it suits me right down to the ground.
The one thing missing is someone to cuddle up to and feel secure holding. With one of those I can sleep all day long, and used to when my last ex was so exhausted from work she would spend all Sunday in the land of Nod. Bliss!

More Books A’Comin’.
Last Friday I learned there are more books arriving from several publishers—Friends of ED, PeachPit Press, Osborne/McGraw-Hill, New Riders and others. Thanks, guys!
So that means more reviews soon, and more knowledge at hand. In my academic years I was a big promoter of the idea of well-stocked libraries. At one point I was helping spend quite a lot of money in several libraries. My first ex carried on the tradition when she was working in a university library here.
The collections at most of those libraries have been somewhat neglected since then, but at least I had the satisfaction of building what were at the time several pretty damned good collections of art and design books.

Lazy Sunday Afternoon.
I felt so lazy on Sunday that I didn’t even feel like posting the short excuse I had written. So here it is today:
No posts today! Feeling too damned lazy!
