Ultimate Punishment: A lawyer's reflection on dealing with the death penalty - Scott Turow [David Harris' Science & Literature] An interesting review. Capital punishment has always seemed to me to be a strange Medieval throwback. It's bizzare to think that we in the UK were still stringing people up until 1964.
This site has some useful capital punishment resources, with a lot of UK centric as well as global information. There's also a monthly listing of known executions around the world.
Here is a quotation from the page about the garotte: The first woman to be garotted was 27 year old Mariana Pineda, on the 26th of May 1831, in Andalusia, Spain for treason. Mariana had embroidered a flag with the words "Equality, Liberty, Law".
It was a long time ago, I'll admit, but executing someone for embroidery seems ... harsh.
