The Writing On The Wall for PDAs

The Writing On The Wall for PDAs. I just got this from SmartMobs and Roland's weblog - it's a fantastic article about GM switching from PDAs to intelliphones. And Roland's site adds a bit more analysis: Mobile phones are cheaper to buy and maintain and users are more comfortable with them. Yep.

...

Now this service is just using freakin' NexTel phones, which generally suck. Imagine the sorts of things you can do with a Series 60 or P800. These devices are going to hit the corporate world like a bomb in a few short months.

...

Exciting stuff.

Farewell to PDAs, Hello to Smart Phones

Roland Piquepaille writes "Is it time to get rid of your PDA? Apparently yes, according to General Motors, writes Ephraim Schwartz in InfoWorld. The subtitle of this story is pretty clear: "GPS, Java, and push-to-talk give smart phones a clear edge over PDAs."

What Goes on Here in Mobile Wireless Networking

The mission of the Broadband Wireless Systems Research Department is to create the technological foundation for a ubiquitous wireless communications environment, where untethered communication is as attractive to the computing and broadband data community as cellular and cordless connectivity are to telephone users.

Mobile Interdomain Roaming

As you walk out of your office building, your PDA connected to corporate 802.11 WLAN switches automatically over to a wide-area wireless network such as GPRS/WCDMA and VPN connection is established back to your corporate network. As you approach an airport or your neighborhood coffee shop, the connection then switches to the public WLAN and the VPN connection is also rerouted through the newly acquired network. All through this, the applications on your PDA run continuously without your intervention. There are many interesting and challenging problems that need to be solved before our vision can become a reality, such as vertical handoff among different air interfaces and account and security management across multiple networks. Plenty to keep us busy! (Much the details of this project is still not public due to various reasons. Please contact Paul Henry for further discussions.)

I found this site to be different than the Bell head research sites of the past.  It really shows off their people and their applied projects.  To move to the next level they need to start blogging their wares and creating blogging conversations with other projects and people that could use their technology.

Oh yeah.  This group looks like their having way to much fun!!  So cool. H.G.
