How does RSS scale

Spoke with Phil Wolfe, who's interested in how RSS scales; a topic we should really work on. We'll need a flame-free environment to do that. It's the perennial problem. [Scripting News]

 

Real business concern.  Not to much of a problem when you first start out.  As your site or service grows and scales to a larger audience, bandwidth saving solutions based around best practices to efficiently deploy RSS will save the business money.

This will be especially important if we plan to use RSS with mobile devices.  In the mobile phone arena, not only is the bandwidth from phone to the Internet low, the vendors (telcos) charge by metering the bytes.  Any bandthwidth inefficiencies directly increase the cost of RSS application use to the customer.

Both mobile network sales and courage are down

Both mobile network sales and courage are down. Mobile network infrastructure sales are low, and according to Nokia CEO and chairman Jorma Ollila, the short term future doesn't appear much brighter either. He beliefs that the market as a whole will decline by around 15 to 20 percent in 2003. "We do not see any signs of improvement in the infrastructure markets this year. Operator investments have decreased to exceptionally low levels, and network rollouts continue slowly. We expect the overall market to contract by 15 percent or more."
