Mike Sanders says that the future is in HTML, Scoble?
Mike Sanders says that the future is in HTML.
Mike: here's a secret from your big old evil Microsoft employee (me): HTML is a first-class citizen in Longhorn. It ain't going away... [Robert Scoble: Scobleizer Weblog]
First lets remember that Scoble is an Evangelist for Microsoft. His future at Microsoft depends on how well he can sell Microsoft's future to us. Knowing this makes it real easy to see through his rap. He is by definition bias.
Scoble's angle of late is to convince us that if Microsoft leaves HTML alone, no wrong done, right. He uses the old playground tactics "if they (Macromedia and Adobe) can do it, we should be able to and not be considered bad since we're just following, right". His remarks lead and try hard to convince us that the world we all surf today is filled with a majority of flash and pdf files. The fact is, even though their numbers are impressive, Macromedia and Adobe have really only played with extensions, and haven't succeeded in removing the main Web doc open standard itself, the big guy, html from the web.
The point he's missing (or pretending to miss) is the people want one open, standardized main networkable document model. The vendors can innovate all they want by using the extensions made available to them with this model. That's what works best for all. Play with the extensions but don't waste your time trying to move out the big guy, html. Remember we're watching, weblogs at hand.
It's in the interest of everyone that the great looking apps of 2005 are developed using open standard doc technologies. The difference this time is we are all looking, watching and talking along the way. Not just at the scene at the end complaining or trying to figure out how it all went wrong.
Scoble, you seem like a nice guy and mean well. But no thanks, no matter how pretty I won't give up my values or most importantly "our and the future's stake in the web". NICE TRY!!!!
