RSS 2.0 Enclosures

RSS 2.0 Enclosures.

RSS 2.0 has an interesting feature called enclosures. It basically lets you have a link in your RSS feed that points to a media file or something so that you can download it in advance so it plays without having to wait for it when you get to it. It's moving blogging to be more "push" than "pull", but that's a good thing for big files. It certainly fits my blogging/browsing style and makes a lot of sense in the context of RSS.

See Chris Lydon's special RSS feed for a very good example. Currently, PopHeadlines (.Net), Radio (Windows, Mac) and VOX Lite (Windows) support enclosures.

UPDATE: ChrisDodo on #joiito just mentioned a point that I'd missed. The bandwidth issues. I guess the aggregators are going to have to be smart and allow you to filter stuff so you don't end up with tons and tons of media files hogging your bandwidth.

New client software: Enclosure Extractor

Enclosure Extractor allows you "to easily extract and download enclosures from newsfeeds."  [Scripting News]

I've been waiting patiently for someone to write something like this.  I'll be trying this software out today for sure.  I'll report back here by tonight.

If this software works as advertised it would be a great way for users at home/work/school to follow any multimedia objects being produced at BloggerCon and made available on the web.  We just need a RSS enclosure feed or 2 at the event. The wheels are spinning.

A "BloggerCon community multimedia feed" provided by the use of RSS enclosures and some simple backend web scripting, would at least potentially level the playing field for all multimedia enabled content produced at BloggerCon and made available on the Web.

Also listen to my thoughts on why:  BloggerCon needs a RSS enclosure feed - more

Grateful Dead/Phish style recording

from "Groundrules for BloggerCon" by Dave Winer ...
"In the last week or so the number one FAQ is whether or not there will be an audio or video record of BloggerCon and whether or not it will be webcast. Frankly, I don't know. I'm going to leave that up to you. Let's do it the way the Grateful Dead used to do it, bring your microphone or camera and recording device, and record it and broadcast it any way you like. Be innovative. Have fun. Share. Be cool. Still diggin. Etc."
So cool!!! What about doing some "Audioblogging live" at BloggerCon.
