Reuters. Verizon selects Corning as primary fiber supplier for its massive fiber to the home roll-out. Verizon said Monday that its initial deployment plans involve about 1 million homes next year, with the pace potentially doubling in 2005. This is starting to look real. As cable companies and VoIP vendors begin to attack Verizon's core market, it needs to expand into other areas. Fiber will allow it to go to the moon in terms of the services that it could provide. It could also destroy the cable television business as channels go ala carte direct to consumers (all Verizon would need to do is step out of the way). [John Robb's Weblog]
