first snow day 2002
Went up to lake tahoe yesterday with TonyG, and met up with RichardB at SugarBowl. it was going OFF yesterday! Feet and feet of powder, the only thing better would have been a bit more light and visibility!

I ended up going over the gully again! We were making our way down from Mt. Lincon when suddenly we found ourselves at the gully. I was scared shitless when I realized I couldn't back out: it was too risky to try to get out of my board and climb up. So, deep breath, jump up, point the board forward, over the edge, and POOF... 40 (?) ft drop into a cloud of snow... Ok, that wasn't so bad :-) The first time over the gully, two years ago, was harder because it was all ice.

Paulette blew a gasket when I told her what I did. It didn't help that I was showing her video of the next guy who foolishly jumped off the same ledge. This might be my first, and LAST, ski day, ever, if her protests are real. :-)

BTW, having the video camera with me as AWESOME! I definitely want to take more video on the slopes... not sure what I'll do with it, but at a minimum I can share my snow days with my wife. I'll just need to edit out the bonzai bits.

arg, the PB is STILL broken!
After several hours of use, apps started freezing, and the airport signal went to zero. Rebooted, and the airport signal remained at zero. Rebooted again, and the airport card is no longer visible to the system! Same shit again!

beware the "kick thru" ads

Is "Kick Through" a New Ad Format?

I was just reading the New York Times Online, that low grade publication that still serves pop-unders. I wasn't fully concentrating and forgot to zap the pop-under as it launched. Presented on my screen was an Orbitz ad with 6 reindeer faces on it. For some reason I decided to play with the ad.

As I rolled over the first face the reindeer said "Orbitz" in a lapland accent. On moving my mouse cursor over the 3rd face the ad kicked me through to Orbitz's website.

Interestingly it appears that the ad had reacted to my playing with it - instead of me having to click through to move on to their website, it kicked me through because I'd interacted with it. Can anyone confirm whether this is a new approach, or has my recent pop-under slaughtering rampage made me miss a development?

Ug. so now I gotta fight pop-ups, pop-unders, AND motion-detecting banner ads? Sheesh!

introduction to the creative commons
At the creative commons launch party this week, 'they' unveiled this animation, which does an excellent job of describing the problems with copyright law, and how creative commons augments copyright law to make dervative works easier to clear. A must-view, everyone!

new website is coming along
While my PB was in the shop, I struggled to upgrade my server machine to 10.2. I had to settle for 10.2 and not 10.2 server, then got Fink re-installed. I'm still having troubles getting MySQL to start up (why oh why can't the fink script set the permissions properly?!?!), and I need to fiddle with Tomcat to put it on port 80 and set up all the domain names.

Once I get MySQL running again, I'mm going to install both Roller and PersonalBlog, and try each out for a few days. Then I'll pick one and make it the root webapp for Tomcat. A few days later, I hope to move my domain name deeje.com to my server :-)

The challenge after that (phew!) is to move all my Radio blog items into my new weblog, which ever that may be. I can hardly wait to SEARCH! :-)

third time's a charm?
Hi all, got my PowerBook back last night. Backlight is working fine, and the airport card has been on solid so far. We'll see what happens later today as the computer heats up.

Lots of stuff to blog...
