Banner ads take up just under 10% of your screen

Haven't Online Ad Sizes Really Kept to the Same Size?

A simple thought that just occured to me. Since new ad formats were introduced (e.g. CNet's square Flash ads,) conventional wisdom states that online graphical ads (as opposed to text ads) have been growing in size. That's of course true in absolute terms, but aren't we forgetting that computer screens increased in resolution at the same time?

When the 468x60 banner was the overwhelming standard format, most people used screens set to 640x480 or 800x600, and at the time moving beyond 1024x768 at a reasonable refresh rate required $1,000+ monitors. Now that users are moving to 1024x768 and more, aren't the bigger formats in fact just keeping up in relative terms?
